8 Smart Tips to Maximize Your Blog Content

Working smarter, not harder is the way to go with blogging and social media.

Creating a great article for your blog is a long process and it takes time to craft the perfect headline, write an interesting article and then find a photo. Many bloggers stop working once they hit publish and wonder why no one is coming to their blog or sharing.

Cross promoting your blog content across social media platforms sounds complicated but once you put it into your routine, you’ll find that it’s worth the effort.

Tip #1

Have the link to your latest blog post underneath your email signature using WiseStamp. You only need to set this up once and it will update via RSS feed. http://ift.tt/k3DNYE

While you are setting up your WiseStamp email signature, add your social media links as well so people can follow you.

Tip #2

Be tweetable.

Add a tweetable quote to your blog posts to engage Twitter users using Click to Tweet. http://ift.tt/M1O1dR

Try it here...click to tweet >> http://ctt.ec/q2IMD

What are your favorite ways to share your blog content? I'd love to hear in the comments below.

Scheduled HOA Events are here! Jump up and down and rejoice!
HOA Tips & HOA Events Tips
The ability for you to plan a (HOA) Hangout on Air event ahead of time is now here for all of us to use. We now have a Real HOA Event Tool

This means the use of the old Event tool may go away for most people and the confusion of an event being a 'hangout' or 'on air' type vs. a hybrid HOA Event may become a thing of the past!

The new "Schedule a Hangout on Air" button creates a SHOAE (Scheduled HOA Event)... with lots of great options and integration so here are the main things you should know about...
Using the Scheduled HOA Event Tool lets you:
► Harvest a Reserved Video Link for an upcoming HOA (you can advertise that ahead of time... Way ahead of time)
► Schedule a HOA Event in advance and advertise that event page
► Add in a Video or Graphic 'Trailer' which will be automatically replaced with the Live HOA video when you start broadcasting (no more hunting around for a YouTube link pasting spot just before you go live)
►  If you add a Graphic Trailer image, it can be an animated GIF
► With or without a Graphic Trailer there's a countdown timer when interacted with on the event page (not with a video trailer)
► You can swap out the trailer at any time before the show starts
► Q&A App is easily integrated into the SHOAE

Bottom Line here is that the new Scheduled HOA Event option is much smarter and more like what we've all been wanting for quite a while. Your Event it creates acts as a great landing page for live activity.

Read up on the official Help Page for the tool:

Quantum Internet: First Teleportation to a Solid-State Quantum Memory
http://adafru.it/b95387

Via MIT Technology Review.

Quantum teleportation is the ability to transmit from one location to another without traveling through the space in between. Matter itself doesn’t make this journey, only the information that describes it. This is transmitted to a new body that takes on the identity of the original.

But while science fiction fans have focused on body involved, quantum physicists are more interested in the information. For them, teleportation is the enabling technology behind a new generation of information processing technologies including a quantum Internet that allows information to be transmitted with perfect security.

One of the building blocks of the quantum Internet will be quantum routers that can receive quantum information from location and route it on to another without destroying it. So the race is on to demonstrate this kind of technology, which has the potential to revolutionize communications.

Today, Felix Bussières at the University of Geneva in Switzerland and a few pals say they’ve taken an important step towards this. These guys have teleported quantum information to a crystal doped with rare-earth ions—a kind of quantum memory. But crucially they’ve done it for the first time over the kind of ordinary optical fiber that telecommunications that are in use all over the world.

One of the main requirements for widespread teleportation is entangled photons with a wavelength compatible with telecom fiber. That’s not so easy to produce since the entangled photons must be compatible with the discrete energy jumps in the quantum memory. “This wavelength is typically far away from the low-loss region of standard optical fiber,” say Bussières and co.

So the trick these guys have perfected is to generate entangled pairs of photons with different wavelengths. The first has a wavelength of 883nm (near-infrared), which is compatible with a type of quantum memory made of neodymium-doped yttrium orthosilicate crystals. The second has a wavelength of 1338nm (mid infrared), which passes easily through telecoms optical fiber.

The quantum state to be teleported is the polarization of a 1338nm photon. So these guys send the 883nm signal to the quantum memory where it is stored while transmitting the 1338 signal through a 12 km fiber to another apparatus that prepares a third photon (also at 1338 nm) with the polarization to be teleported.

This is when the teleportation takes place. When these two 1338nm photons are made to interact in a certain way, the polarization is teleported to the quantum memory at the other end of the experiment.

"...while light of any wavelength might slow down instantaneously in a medium, anything with mass won’t. So if you’re moving at 80%, 90%, or 99.9999% the speed of light-in-vacuum and then you transition into water all of a sudden, you’ll find yourself moving faster than the speed of light in that new medium! And if that’s the case, something remarkable happens.

When a charged particle moving slower than the speed of light-in-vacuum enters a medium where it’s moving faster than light in that medium, it polarizes the surrounding molecules as it passes them. The excited molecules quickly drop back down to their ground state, emitting a very special type of radiation known as Čerenkov radiation, which shows up as a characteristic blue glow in, for example, the nuclear reactor shown above."

How to build quality circles

Circle sharing is getting a bad reputation these days, mainly because of the "+1 and reshare to get into this circle" phenomenon.

If you run such a circle, consider removing this criteria. It attracts a lot of spammers, and you don't want that?

Instead, take a look at a set of rules I have come up with for adding profiles with higher quality:

Profile completely filled out
No ifs or buts. The profiles in your circle will often be used by new people on G+, and we all need to know exactly who we add. And generally, spammers do not take the time to fill out their profiles!
Example: http://ift.tt/1kzhEYa

Profile picture of the person
Not their kid or pet. And not a company logo. I am talking about profiles here, not pages.

Coverphoto changed
May sound unnecessary, but as this will serve as examples for beginners, I want it all to be correct. It also gives you another possibility to learn to know the person behind the profile.

Posting frequency
Latest post should not be older than 7 days. This means that no inactive profiles end up in your circle.

High ratio of own content to resharing
Minimum 60%-40%. Meaning that for every 10 posts, minimum 6 should be original posts, not reshares. Why go for the resharers when you can go one step up and find the original content?

No memesharers or profiles that just shares tons of photos
If the photos are their own, it is good. But people that just steal other peoples pictures and post the are just content hoarders. It has nothing to do with real content. It is ok if someone posts a picture or meme now and then. But the photographer should always be credited!

No profiles that has a high count of circle sharing
If someone spend most of their time sharing circles, what is there to interact with? Google+ is all about interaction, not how many followers you have.

Only make circles with specific themes
You should have a reason for making a circle. And keep it small so that you have the time to maintain it. If you want photography, add 50-100 photographers in a circle and make sure they all follow the rules above. You could even be more specific and go for landscape photographers. Or 50-100 food bloggers/chefs. Or 50-100 writers. Find your own themes.

When I am considering adding someone to my circles, these are points I consider. I want people that I can learn something from and that I can interact with.

Can you think of any other things? What do you think of these rules?

What goes around, comes around

On September 3, 2002, an amateur astronomer named Bill Yeung looked into his telescope and discovered a strange object near Earth.  Experts were surprised to discover that it was orbiting Earth!  The orbit was unstable, which meant this object hadn't been here long.  But there was no recently launched spacecraft that matched the orbit of this thing!

It got the name J002E3.  It's fun to watch this animated gif and see how J002E3 came in from the Lagrange point L1 between the Earth and Sun, went around the Earth a few times, and then got kicked out.

But what was it?

University of Arizona astronomers found that its electromagnetic spectrum was consistent with white titanium dioxide paint - the same paint used by NASA for the Saturn V rockets. Tracing back its orbit, they found that it had probably been orbiting the Sun for 31 years.  The last time it was near Earth was1971.

This seemed to suggest that it was a part of the Apollo 14 mission. But NASA knew the whereabouts of all hardware used for this mission!  The third stage of that rocket, for example, was deliberately crashed into the Moon for seismic studies.

So, the most likely explanation seems to be that J002E3 is the third stage of the rocket for Apollo 12.  NASA originally planned to shoot this into an orbit around the Sun.  But they used more of the propellant than planned, and it seems that venting the rest didn't give this rocket stage enough energy to escape the Earth–Moon system.   So, it ended up in a complicated orbit around the Earth after passing by the Moon on November 18, 1969.

It may hit earth someday!   It weighs 10 tonnes.  But don't worry: a 10-tonne meteor hits the Earth every few years, and most of them don't cause much trouble.

I think saw this animated gif in a post by Ole Olson.  The explanation here is adapted from Wikipedia:

http://ift.tt/1lezCgz

and the animated gif was made by Paul Chodas & Ron Baalke of NASA.

The idea of a star-within-a-star is weird. Known as a Thorne-Żytkow Object, a nesting-doll star was first proposed by two physicists, Kip Thorne and Anna Żytkow, back in the '70s. But no one has ever seen one. Now, though, Alexandra Witze reports at Nature, astronomers have found the best candidate yet. Although a neutron star is only ten miles or so across, its gravitational pull is so strong that it could draw matter away from its huge but more diffuse companion. In the process, it would slow down, like a ship dragging an anchor. Eventually the neutron star, in an ever-shrinking orbit, would plow into the outer layers of its neighbor. After a few thousand years it would spiral down into the star’s center, demolishing the existing stellar core but leaving the rest of the star essentially intact. A red giant that has been violated in this way has come to be called a Thorne-Zytkow object--even though no one has ever seen one.

Quote of the Day

"The one important thing I have learned over the years is the difference between taking one's work seriously and taking one's self seriously. The first is imperative, the second is disastrous."
– Margot Fonteyn

About Margot Fonteyn
Margot Fonteyn, the elegant British prima ballerina, is considered one of the truly great dancers of our time. She was born in 1919 in Surrey. She made her debut in 1934 as a snowflake in Nutcracker and was a leading ballerina within four years. She flirted with retirement in the late 1950's until Rudolf Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union; he became her dancing partner for the next decade, a brilliant creative match despite their 20-year age difference. She died in February 1991.
