I love the way +Lindsey Stirling plays! If I ever pulled my viola out again I would love to learn a duet. She falls far outside the classical "attitude" I was taught and it is absolutely a breath of fresh air!

It's a little hard to tell from these first two pics but our Pergola was a little out of line. So, I applied some basic engineering (statics/dynamics) to the structure and added some diagonal wiring to put the tension on and move that center post. The second pic it is easier to see that it is straight down the lattice work.

The third pic is a bonus pic of our pergola today. We plan to put a wall fountain against the far fence so when you look through the "tunnel" you have an interesting end to the sight line.

I've had a dream for our backyard and part of it was being able to recycle in a green way. These are pics of my (poor) garden area. What I am excited about is after several years of working a 3 bin compost system we are finally reaping the benefits. So far we've pulled out 2 wheel barrow loads and still have at least 1 more load in the fine compost bin. When I started composting 4 years ago it was almost impossible to find a worm anywhere and now we can pull out worms with every handful of compost. Yay worms!

As I go through a complete readjustment to the way I eat and move to a new way of looking at my food - BAM - this article comes out. What an eye-opening read. Our diets, yes those diets recommended by the health organizations of our country, are to blame for the increase in heart problems, diabetes, obesity, etc.

I am also wondering if they (pulsars) could be used as known points for a deep space navigation system...

I would love to learn how to make a Tesla Coil. And I have some very specific experiments in mind as well once I understand how to work with ultra high voltage with extremely low amperage.

Now this could be interesting for both the SciFi loving community as well as the hard science community. I'm not 100% certain what it will mean to us except a different way to look at our galaxy and the universe as a whole.

Water features for our backyard

I am slowly learning about outdoor landscaping and how to accomplish a vision within a space.  Our backyard is my first major endeavor upon this path and at nearly a 1/4 acre I have room to do many things.  One of the main missing pieces are the water features I want to have.

I already have a hole dug for a pond and am saving my pennies for the remaining pieces of that puzzle.  Mainly the pond liner, piping, upper pool/skimmer and pumps.  Across the yard from our pergola I want to install a wall fountain of some sort.  Right now we are thinking of the classical lion head but the array of choices has grown in the last several years.  For instance, the article from Garden Design shows just 5 fountains and I am really starting to dig the goat head fountain, though my favorite is #4, the clear ball fountain.

Since I am going for a mostly Italian/Mediterranean feeling (on a Colorado property!) my eye gets drawn to art/fountain pieces like the lion head, the goat head and even just the simple 3 or 4 spigot fountains.  What are some of your favorite water features for a backyard?

Black hole shreds a star.

Ever wondered what happens when a star approaches a black hole, is captured by the severe gravity well and then the star finally engages the black hole up close and personal? If you have, just keep reading.
